First the line. A string line pulled the full run, post positions marked at even centres, and the boundary confirmed before anything goes in the ground. On a shared boundary that is worth being certain about, because a fence in the wrong place is an expensive conversation later.
Then the old fence comes out, including digging out the old post concrete, and it gets carted away. New holes go down to depth, posts set plumb and concreted, and then we leave them alone until the concrete has gone off properly rather than hanging rails off green concrete the same afternoon.
Rails go on level, or raked to follow the ground on a slope, and the palings or slats go up to a consistent gap and a straight top line. Gates get hung and adjusted, the site gets cleaned up, and we stain it if that is in the job.
The posts and rails underneath are the same standard on all of them. What changes is how much you see through it, how much timber it takes and what it costs per metre.
The standard boundary fence and the best value per metre. Palings butted or lapped, one side or both. Does the job and does it for decades.
Horizontal slats with even gaps. Modern, lets light and air through, and looks considerably better from inside the house. Costs more in timber and time.
Boards with battens over the joins. Completely solid, no gaps to see through, and the best of the timber options for blocking noise and wind.
Heavier posts, braced frames and hardware worth paying for. Single, double or sliding, built so they clear the ground and stay square.

Under the Fencing Act, neighbours generally share the cost of an adequate fence on a shared boundary. The practical version is that you serve them a fencing notice with the quote and the details, and if they agree, you split it. If you want something dearer than adequate, the extra is usually on you. Talk to them before you talk to us and the whole job goes more smoothly.
In most residential situations a boundary fence up to 2m is fine without consent. Above that, or where the fence is on a retaining wall or near a boundary with specific rules, it needs checking. We flag it at the quote if your job is near the line.
A standard residential run is usually two to three days: posts in and concreted on day one, then rails and palings once the concrete has gone off. Longer runs, sloping ground and gates add to it.
A rule of thumb is a third of the post in the ground, so a 1.8m fence has posts around 600mm deep, concreted in. Gate posts and anything in soft ground or exposed to wind go deeper. This is the single biggest difference between a fence that stays plumb and one that leans.
Yes. Pulling the old fence out, digging out the old post concrete and carting it all away is part of the job and it is in the quote. You do not need to arrange a skip.
Yes, and there are two ways to do it. Stepped, where each panel is level and drops in steps, which suits a formal look. Or raked, where the fence follows the slope and the rails run parallel to the ground. We show you both at the quote because they look quite different.
Yes, and gates are where cheap fencing fails first. Ours get heavier posts, proper bracing and quality hinges and latches, because a gate that drops and drags is the part you deal with every day.
Not structurally. Treated pine left bare will silver off to grey and last a long time regardless. Staining holds the colour and looks considerably better, particularly on a fence you see from inside the house. We can stain it or leave it to you.
