Replacing old decks
Many Hokowhitu homes have decks that have done 20 or 30 years. When the piles or framing underneath have rotted, putting new boards on top is wasted money, and a full replacement is the better spend. We pull the old deck out, take it away, and build new from the piles up. Removal is included in the price we quote you.
Decks that suit an older home
On a villa or bungalow, a deck that looks bolted on can spoil the house. We pay attention to deck height against the original door thresholds, board direction, and finishing details like fascia boards and steps. Timber, especially kwila, usually suits an older home better than a manufactured board.
Shade, trees and damp
Mature trees are part of Hokowhitu's character, and they mean shade, leaf litter and damp corners. On shaded decks we leave good ventilation underneath, keep board gaps consistent so the deck drains and dries, and talk you through boards that handle shade better. Smooth boards are easier to keep moss-free than grooved ones.
Low and level
Hokowhitu is mostly flat, so most decks are low and straightforward, which keeps them affordable and usually means no consent or balustrade is needed.
