pool decks

A deck that makes the pool part of the yard

A good pool deck turns a pool from something sitting in the lawn into the centre of the back yard. It gives you somewhere to sit, keeps grass and dirt out of the water, and with an above-ground pool, it gives everyone an easy, safe way in.

It is also where the building side gets a bit more serious. A deck changes how people, and small children, get to the water, so it has to be planned together with the pool barrier. We build pool decks and the fencing around them as one job, so the two work together rather than against each other.

Pool decks and the pool barrier

New Zealand law requires a barrier around residential pools that small children cannot get through or over, and councils inspect pool barriers regularly. The rules are set out in the Building Act and clause F9 of the Building Code.

A deck can get this wrong without anyone meaning to. A deck edge, built-in seat, planter or step close to the outside of a pool fence can give a child a leg up and over it. With above-ground pools, the deck itself often becomes part of the access to the water. So we plan a pool deck by asking:

  • Where is the barrier, and does any part of the deck, steps or seating make it climbable from outside?
  • Does the gate swing the right way and self-close and latch, with nothing on the deck stopping it?
  • For an above-ground pool, how is access controlled when the pool is not in use?
  • Does the layout still work for adults moving between the house, deck and pool?

We will tell you where we think the barrier needs to be. Your council is the final word on pool barrier compliance, and we recommend confirming the layout with them, especially on a new pool.

spa decks

Spa pool and hot tub decks

A spa pool deck is one of the most popular small deck jobs we do. A spa or hot tub is heavy when it is full of water and people, so where it sits matters.

  • On the ground, deck around it: the spa sits on a level concrete pad or compacted base, and the deck is built up around it so you step down into the water. This is the most common layout and keeps the weight off the deck.
  • On the deck: possible, but the framing under the spa has to be designed for a full spa's weight. Check the manufacturer's figures; we will build the frame to suit.
  • Access for servicing: we leave a removable panel or hatch so the spa's pump and equipment can be reached.
  • Covers and barriers: spa pools with a lockable lid that meets the standard are generally treated differently from open pools, but check the requirements for yours with the council.

Deck around pool edges, or an above ground pool and deck

For an above ground pool, a deck built around it at or near the pool's rim turns it into a proper feature and makes getting in and out easy. For in-ground pools, a deck around the pool replaces tired paving and gives somewhere warm underfoot to sit. Looking for pool deck ideas? Composite boards in a light grey, a built-in bench along one edge and a shade roof or pergola over the seating area are combinations that work well.

Best decking for around a pool

Composite

Composite is the most popular choice around pools. It does not splinter, it handles constant water, and it needs no oiling. Lighter colours stay cooler under bare feet in summer. More about composite decks.

Kwila and hardwood

Hardwood looks great around a pool and is very hard-wearing. Plan for the tannin bleed in the first months, and keep up the oiling. More about hardwood decks.

Treated pine

The budget option. It works well if you keep up the staining, but it can splinter as it ages, which is worth thinking about where people are barefoot. More about pine decks.

Drainage and splash

Whatever the board, a pool deck gets wet constantly. We keep board gaps consistent so water drains, leave ventilation under low decks, and use stainless fixings where chlorinated or salt water splashes.

pricing

What a pool deck costs

Pool decks follow the same per-m² pricing as other decks, plus the cost of any pool fencing, gates and cut-outs around the pool:

DeckingIndicative installed priceExample: 20m² ground-level deck
H3.2 treated pine$300 – $550 per m²$6,000 – $11,000
Kwila & hardwood$450 – $850 per m²$9,000 – $17,000
Composite$550 – $1,000 per m²$11,000 – $20,000

These are indicative ranges only, not a quote. They are a rough guide based on typical New Zealand deck pricing, set deliberately wide. Height off the ground, ground conditions, access, board and fixing choice, stairs, balustrade, removal of an old deck and whether consent is needed all move the final number, sometimes a long way. The only price that counts is the fixed written price we give you after measuring up on site. Prices include GST.

See our deck cost guide for balustrade, glass and stair costs.

FAQs

Pool & spa decks: questions we get asked

Do you build spa pool and hot tub decks?

Yes. Usually the spa sits on a level pad and we build the deck around it so you step down into the water. We can also build a deck strong enough to take a spa on top, designed for its full weight.

Do you build decks around above-ground pools?

Yes. A deck around an above-ground pool needs careful planning, because it usually becomes the way into the water. We plan the barrier and access together so the pool stays compliant.

Do you build the pool fence as well?

Yes. We build the deck and the timber pool fence as one job, so the deck does not make the barrier climbable. See our fencing page too.

What is the best decking around a pool?

Composite is the most popular because it does not splinter and needs no oiling. Kwila and pine both work, with a bit more maintenance.

Will the council inspect my pool deck?

Councils inspect residential pool barriers regularly, and a new pool or a change to the barrier may need to be checked. We recommend confirming the layout with the council on any new pool.

Can a deck be part of the pool barrier?

In some layouts, yes, but it has to meet the barrier requirements itself. It is something to design carefully, and confirm with the council, rather than assume.

Is composite decking slippery around a pool?

Capped composite boards have a textured surface and are generally no more slippery than timber. Keep the deck clean and free of algae in shady spots.
