Each board covers its own width plus the gap beside it. A 90mm board with a 5mm gap covers 95mm, so a square metre of deck takes about 10.5 lineal metres of 90mm boards, or about 6.9 lineal metres of 140mm boards. The deck board estimator adds 10% for offcuts and waste, then divides by your board length to give a board count.
The joist count assumes boards run along the length of the deck, with joists running across it at typical centres: around 450mm for pine and hardwood, closer for composite, which is often 400mm or less depending on the brand. Bearers, piles and blocking are not included, because they depend on the deck height and span tables in NZS 3604.
The price uses the same indicative per-m² ranges as our deck cost guide, adjusted for height, plus balustrade per lineal metre and a range per flight of stairs. It does not include consent, removal of an old deck, or difficult sites.

About 10.5 lineal metres of 90mm boards or about 6.9 lineal metres of 140mm boards per square metre, with a 5mm gap. Add around 10% for waste.
Commonly around 450mm centres for 32mm pine boards and many hardwoods, and closer for composite, often 400mm or less. Always follow the board manufacturer's spec.
