privacy screen deck

Make the deck feel like yours

On newer subdivisions in Kelvin Grove and Whakarongo, the neighbour's living room is often looking straight at your deck. Out in Ashhurst, the problem is the wind. Either way, a well-placed privacy screen is often the difference between a deck you use and one you avoid.

We build deck screening into new decks, and add privacy screens to existing decks where the frame can take the posts.

Deck privacy ideas that work

Horizontal slat screens

The most popular look: horizontal timber slats with small gaps. Blocks the direct view while letting light and some air through. Gaps can be tighter for privacy or wider for airflow.

Vertical batten screens

Vertical battens suit some homes better and can be spaced to block views from one angle while staying open from another.

Half-height screens

A screen at seated head height blocks the view when you are sitting down without boxing the deck in when you stand.

Screens with planters or seating

One of our favourite deck privacy screen ideas: combining a privacy wall for deck edges with built-in planter boxes or bench seating makes the screen part of the deck rather than an add-on.

Wind screens

On exposed sites, a screen on the windward side makes a big difference. Slatted screens cut wind better than solid ones, which can create turbulence on the sheltered side.

building them

Building a deck screen that stays straight

  • Posts into the frame: screen posts are fixed into the deck framing or set in the ground, not screwed to the deck boards. A screen is a sail in the wind.
  • Consistent gaps: slats are spaced evenly with spacers so the screen looks crisp.
  • Matching timber: we use the same timber as the deck, or a contrasting one if you want.
  • Height near boundaries: a tall screen close to a boundary can trigger district plan rules about height and daylight. We check at the quote.

Combine a screen with a roof or pergola for a sheltered outdoor room, or see more in our covered deck and shade ideas.

pricing

What a deck privacy screen costs

Screens are priced by length and height. As a rough guide, a slatted timber screen is often a few hundred dollars per lineal metre installed, depending on height, timber and how it is fixed. You get a fixed price in writing after we measure up.

These are indicative ranges only, not a quote. They are a rough guide based on typical New Zealand deck pricing, set deliberately wide. Height off the ground, ground conditions, access, board and fixing choice, stairs, balustrade, removal of an old deck and whether consent is needed all move the final number, sometimes a long way. The only price that counts is the fixed written price we give you after measuring up on site. Prices include GST.

Every job is priced on site with a fixed written quote. For indicative deck prices, see the deck cost guide or try the deck calculator.

FAQs

Deck privacy screens: questions we get asked

Can you add a privacy screen to my existing deck?

Usually, if the frame is sound enough to fix the posts into. We check that first.

How tall can a deck privacy screen be?

It depends on where it is. Tall screens near a boundary can run into district plan height rules. We check that for your site.

Will a screen block my light?

Slatted screens let light through between the slats. Half-height screens block the view when seated without boxing you in.

Do screens help with wind?

Yes. Slatted screens are better than solid ones for wind, because they slow it down instead of making it tumble over the top.

What timber do you use for screens?

Usually the same as the deck, often treated pine or hardwood. It can be stained to match the house.
