Decks for new builds
On a new home the deck height is set by the door thresholds, and on the mostly flat sections around Kelvin Grove that usually means a low deck. That keeps costs down and usually means no balustrade or consent is needed. We set the deck height so water runs away from the house and the step down from the slider is comfortable.
Matching modern homes
Composite is the most popular choice on newer Kelvin Grove homes because it suits modern cladding and joinery and needs no oiling. Kwila is the pick if you want real timber. Treated pine is the most affordable way to get a big deck when the budget has already gone into the house.
Privacy on smaller sections
Newer subdivisions mean closer neighbours. A slatted screen on one side of the deck can block a direct view from next door, and we often build decks and new boundary fences at the same time.
Shade on north-facing decks
Plenty of new Kelvin Grove homes have living areas facing north, which is great in winter and hot in summer. A pergola over part of the deck is a common addition.
