A deck you can use when it rains

A covered deck turns an outdoor space you use a few months a year into one you use most of the year. In the Manawatū that means somewhere to sit out of the drizzle in autumn, out of the hot afternoon sun in summer, and somewhere to put the barbecue that is not in the rain.

We build roofs over decks as part of a new deck, or over an existing deck or patio. One recent customer had us build a roof over the deck of their new house: "His quote was very reasonable and his timeline was stuck to."

Deck roof options in NZ

Covered deck options in NZ range from a simple deck canopy to a fully roofed outdoor covered deck. These are the ones we build most.

Timber-framed roof with clear roofing

The most popular roof over a deck. A timber frame fixed to the house with clear or tinted polycarbonate sheeting on top keeps the rain off while letting light into the house behind it. It is the best choice where the deck sits outside a living room you do not want to darken.

Solid roof

Long-run iron or similar solid roofing gives full shade and a more permanent, outdoor-room feel. It suits decks that already get too much sun, or a covered area designed as a separate outdoor living space. It does darken the rooms behind it, so placement matters.

Pergola

An open timber pergola over the deck gives dappled shade and structure without blocking the sky. It can be roofed later. A pergola is the starting point for many covered decks.

Deck canopy or shade sail

For a lighter-touch deck canopy, shade sails or retractable covers can work over part of the deck. They need strong fixing points and are less durable in strong wind than a fixed roof.

Enclosed decks

Adding screens or walls to one or two sides of a covered deck creates a partly enclosed outdoor room that cuts the wind. Fully enclosing a deck starts to become a room of the house, and the rules change. Talk to us before you plan that.

how we build them

Building a roof over a deck properly

  • Fixed into the structure. The roof's connection to the house goes into the framing, not just the weatherboards or cladding, with flashings so water cannot get behind the cladding.
  • Posts sized and braced for wind. A roof is a big surface for wind to push against. In exposed spots like Ashhurst or Aokautere, posts and bracing are sized for it.
  • Falls and gutters. The roof is pitched so water runs off where you want it, with spouting if it needs to go to a downpipe.
  • Height and outlook. We set the roof height to clear the door heads and keep the view from inside.

Consent: an open pergola is generally exempt from building consent. A roofed structure is different. Schedule 1 has exemptions for some ground-floor verandahs, porches and awnings up to around 30m², with conditions. Larger, higher or more complex roofs may need consent. We will tell you which applies at the quote. See the deck consent guide.

pricing

Covered deck cost

A deck roof cost depends mostly on size, roofing type and how it fixes to the house. As a very rough indication, a timber-framed polycarbonate roof over a typical deck area is often a similar order of cost per m² to the deck itself, and a solid roof more again. For ideas before you decide, read our covered deck and shade ideas.

These are indicative ranges only, not a quote. They are a rough guide based on typical New Zealand deck pricing, set deliberately wide. Height off the ground, ground conditions, access, board and fixing choice, stairs, balustrade, removal of an old deck and whether consent is needed all move the final number, sometimes a long way. The only price that counts is the fixed written price we give you after measuring up on site. Prices include GST.

Every job is priced on site with a fixed written quote. For indicative deck prices, see the deck cost guide or try the deck calculator.

FAQs

Covered decks: questions we get asked

Can you put a roof over my existing deck?

Usually, yes, as long as the house framing can take the connection and there is room for posts. We look at it on site.

Does a deck roof need building consent?

It depends on size and design. Some ground-floor verandahs, porches and awnings up to around 30m² are exempt with conditions. Larger or more complex roofs may need consent. We will tell you at the quote.

Clear or solid roofing?

Clear or tinted polycarbonate keeps light in the house behind the deck. Solid roofing gives full shade. Many people choose clear roofing outside living areas and solid roofing for a separate outdoor room.

Will a deck roof make my house darker?

A solid roof will darken the rooms behind it. Clear roofing keeps most of the light. We can also set the roof higher to keep light coming in.

Can you build a deck and a roof together?

Yes, and it is often cheaper to do both at once, because the deck and roof posts can be planned together.
